University of Phoenix Online? What a Joke!
82Visit web site http://myphoenixmistake.webs.com for more information, including how you can earn $9.5 million dollars just by working at the University of Phoenix as an enrollment counselor.
University of Phoenix Online is a scam for college students and I know this for a fact because I wasn't properly trained in their Bachelors of Science in Information Technology program! Tell me, how many graduates from this I.T. program, with zero real-world work experience, landed a job in Information Technology? Well let me be the first graduate from the Bachelors of Science in Information Technology program who graduated with honors and a 3.9 G.P.A. to tell you that nobody did. And don't blame it on the economy either because I applied for a job as a computer systems administrator I and II for the University of Phoenix's parent company Apollo Group and my resume got rejected. I don't know why I'm not getting a call back or at least an appointment for an interview because computer systems administrators fall under Information Technology so, what seems to be the problem Apollo Group? I graduated with a 3.9 G.P.A. from your company! Do you, Apollo Group, send your I.T. staff to the University of Phoenix Online to further their career in the computer science field?
Computer science is amazing! Look at how far the Internet has come since 1995! We can do so many things now on the Internet like online bill payments, watch our favorite television episodes, join a social online community like Facebook, and a whole lot more. Computer science is amazing and I should capitalize "AMAZING!" The speed at which we can connect to the Internet is amazing, computer programming is amazing, database design is amazing, etc., etc., etc. The I.T. program at the University of Phoenix Online is NOT-AMAZING! It's a joke! The enrollment counselors at the University of Phoenix Online, once they get your foot in the door and they get you to finish your first class, that's the last time you'll hear from them. My enrollment counselor either got fired or quit because he didn't want to scam students anymore.
I smell trouble! An online university in Oregon that operated since the 80's as a diploma mill was recently closed down because they lost their accreditation. They were handing out bachelors degrees to students without any brains! It doesn't take much to learn basic English and math but when it comes to the freshman college level, you better know how to write a 5-page MLA or APA paper. I'm serious too! English at the college level is as easy as logging into your Facebook or Twitter account and every college freshman should know how to spell correctly, how to use capitalization properly, punctuation, etc., as well as the difference between two words for example, when to use "your" instead of "you're." Well, "your" enrollment at the University of Phoenix Online won't be your ticket to career success when "you are" or "you're" out there job hunting. I just proved it, I wasn't hired or scheduled for an interview as a computer systems administrator I and II for Apollo Group, University of Phoenix Online's parent company! And let me tell you that the many scam artists' that are enrollment counselors at the University of Phoenix Online enroll anyone willing to believe that they can earn their bachelors degree and a better paying job. That's the hook line and there are many other hook lines as well. So, like the majority of online students enrolled at the University of Phoenix Online, almost 50% of the online student body could not spell correctly, punctuate correctly, or do anything English-related correctly. And I have all my old online classrooms and learning forums to prove it, believe me, I know about the 2 posts over the 4 different days of the week rule if you want a good participation grade.
Today May 8, 2009, on Yahoo! News, Obama announced that the unemployment rate has gone up, about 600,000 people lost their jobs over the past two months, and he's creating a plan for these recently-unemployed people to return to college and still keep their unemployment benefits. He has increased the amount of the Pell Grant so Americans from all walks of life can get properly trained so that America's future work force will be ready when the economy has fallen back into place! And the University of Phoenix Online will be right there, consuming all that Pell Grant money that their students don't have to pay back. This online university, strangely enough, gets so much student financial aid monies every year and it's scary because as a graduate from this university, they took all my money and I can't get any I.T. job, not even an I.T. internship. Apollo Group won't interview me or hire me, I wonder why?
After 15 employment rejection letters from companies in Hawaii, I am fed up at the University of Phoenix Online for scamming me into wasting a huge load of money, yeah I could've went to Harvard and paid the same, and also a huge amount of time, think 2 years! I only know the little knowledge of computer science and nothing more than that but the little knowledge I've gained I could've learned from self-study books at my local library. I transferred in as a junior and that's why I only spent 2 years in their bachelors of science in I.T. program. I don't know how to program in C++, I don't know how to configure and secure a web (http) server, nor do I even know about a web server, what it is or what it can do while I was enrolled at the University of Phoenix. I learned about the web server from my current school I am attending right now, Heald College Honolulu, and they are a million times better. I also learned about a media server, ftp server, domain server, etc., etc. You won't learn anything at the University of Phoenix Online! You'll graduate and enter the world with a worthless degree while Apollo Groups' board of directors laugh at you during your job interviews because they know that you wasn't properly trained at their company, their online college, their online university, the University of Phoenix Online!
I have one thing to say about the University of Phoenix Online Bachelor's of Science in Information Technology and that is, it doesn't do the job. You only learn little or nothing at all and no real-world job skill training like how it says on their web site. The classes are very easy, if you're good a typing papers, you can graduate with a 4.0 from the University of Phoenix Online B.S.I.T. program. We typed papers for hands-on training instead of hooking up a web server to the Internet and testing our web pages that we designed on our servers. What a joke! And that's why no companies in Hawaii will hire me because I only have a beginner's knowledge of computer science. I'm not an expert programmer, web programmer, database engineer, and the best I save for last, computer systems administrator I or II. That's why Apollo Group didn't or doesn't want to hire me. Apollo Group owns and operates the University of Phoenix Online so come on Apollo, hire your Zeus I.T. God, hire me! But you can't because you didn't train me properly in the foundations and principles of Information Technology/Computer Science. You'll need at least 3 solid years of hands-on training to be a master at anything in this field and let me tell you that the I.T. program here won't teach you anything!
Where does that leave me? Well I do want all my money and time wasted back from this fraudulent university! I have to start all over again, I need to go to college again for another 4 years and get a real bachelors degree. I hate having to start all over again but when I am scammed by one of the biggest destinies in life, to go to college and earn a college degree, that is something you cannot explain. What a joke!
I need all the help I can muster to shut down this diploma mill! I'm serious because Obama is allowing recently unemployed people to go back to college and this university will be right there saying, "Please enroll in our great and confident bachelors degree programs and get a better paying job. Reach for your college goals and become a phoenix." Are you ready for the convenience of online college learning that allows you to keep a full-time job, work at your own pace, or are you ready to go back to college as a stay-at-home mom or dad and learn nothing the whole time? You'd better be good with English and able to type papers because that's how they do it at the University of Phoenix Online! Papers, papers, papers, and no real-world hands on training.
How can someone use the education system to scam people who want to better their lives? Computer scientists' earn anywhere between $50,000 to $300,000 dollars a year. Yes, we can make more than doctors and if you're a God at C++ computer programming working on a custom project, you could earn $500,000 dollars in less than a year, depending on how quickly you finish the clients project. Today, I am not making one cent, there are tons of computer science jobs in my area paying over $100,000 dollars, I have a computer science degree, and I'm unemployed. University of Phoenix Online? Don't enroll here! You won't be able to build and test any computer hardware or software! You won't be able to do anything in the computer science field with a University of Phoenix Online B.S.I.T. degree! What a joke!

Look up "Sally Stroup". She is a link between UoP and the DoE. Part of our next economic colapse, soon you will see a huge market crash again, caused by the student loan industry. It's bigger than UoP, but they are the biggest player, next to the federal government.
Can anyone tell me if there is any hope for recovering any money from these @%&*$%!
What a joke! If you want to see the worst part of all, the reason this school is still in business and continues to profit in an obsene way with 90% government funding while only spending 9 cents of every dollar on education, is that their former head lobyist (Director of Industry and Government Affairs for the Apollo Group Inc. and the University of Phoenix, Sally Stroup) is the Assistant Secretary, Office of Post Secondary Education for the Department of Education. I have one question Sally, how is it that the DoE rejected four of my classes (12 credits) after I "completed" my BSIT?! One thing that the University of Phoenix taught me to do was research online, because they don't teach anything. Infact the so call instructors will tell you they are not in the position to teach , but rather facilitators of education. What the hell is that? I have not finished, nor will I. My suggestion, if you are in my shoes, is to either do what the author of this page is doing or work on certifications that will teach you how to actually perform IT roles. (i.e. CCNA, MCITP, MCSE, etc.) Look up Sally Stroup.
I am a 40 year old woman who got an bachers in Information Tech degree and graduated in 2008, I can't get a job, I agree totally with this article. I owe 40k and am unqualified to do anything in IT as I was taught only the basics of the IT field, and being that it's been years since I got this I have even forgot what I learned. It's so wrong that UOP duped me into believing someone with no real IT job could get the education needed for this field to get a job. I was working in the clerical field my whole life and jobs for this field require previous work experiece and expertise in computer languages. I hope your article will help others to avoid this huge debt with no payoff for the student.
I went to the University of Phoenix online and hardly ever did I get help from my professors. Come to find out, for an Associates Degree program and half a BS degree program, I owe more than $45,000 just for using my own stuff. Now I am in finacial debt because of them.
Hey, I want to help someone else and get help for my problems with UOP. I was lied to about several different things, but one of them is my degree. This is the thing I am MOST pissed off about. I am still enrolled in this piece of shit college because I don't quit something I start. Especially when that something will end up costing me 40,000 dollars! I knew what I wanted to accomplish, I want to do management in computer science. I know how long it will take to do this. I was told by the UOP that I HAD to do an Associates program first, then I can do a Bachelor program. This is a lie, maybe in this shit-hole school, but not at all the other schools. I did not know anything about this, so I just assumed he was right. I now have to pray I can get into some other school after I have been robbed two years of my life, and 40,000. Not to mention the price of thew school would be, oh that was twisted around too. I want my money back for wasting two years of my life, adding two years onto my education endeavors, and robbing my bank account! I will most join any cause to stop these liars from taking money from someone else. Where do I sign up?----Dejavuicutooo
You all need to start reading!!!! the university of phoenix has so many lawsuits against them right now that they will be lucky to remain open by the end of the year!!!! they fraud everyone that enters courses there, watch the news, nightline, 20/20!!!!!! uop is the biggest scam out there for online colleges right now!
Go to facebook and post under complaints on online schools.
We need to get the ball rolling
University of Phoenix is sucking the money out of the government by taking advantage of the American people stupidity. University of Phoenix has the lowest retention rate of freshmen, only 7% moving on to the next year. University of Phoenix has only a 27% graduation rate and over 18% default rate. Having worked for one of the top 3 US banks in the student loan industry I have witnessed the scam tactics they use to get students and I have talked to those students who were defaulting and were unemployed and heard their stories.
I too attended UOP online up until April of this year. Which is when I took a personal medical leave. When trying to return in July, I was informed that I had to pay 1750 up front for my new classes, because they seemed to have over paid me in refunds in the past. When I refused to pay that money knowing they had recieved my Pell money and student loan money, I was then told that I owed for classes I took back in Feb and March. Which is crazy due to the fact that money was already taken out according to their own records which I have a print out of, and guess what now those records have changed saying I owe them 4k. They had the nerve to call me and ask that I re-apply for my pell grant and it would cover that 4k I supposedly owe to them now. The phone does not stop ringing after I informed to now call me. This school is such a rip off, they raised tuition yet again after just raising it not to long ago. If I can find a good attorney I am going after this school. All they want is money they could care less about ones education. I was already informed I could not get a job in my home state with their degree due to no hands on experience, and that their degrees are worthless.
Well, don't let the University of Phoenix get the best of you, it happened to me too. I don't worry about it because GOD will take care of it all in his own timing. I don't have to do anything but meditate on him and his soverignty. He can handle this problem better than anyone. I have trust in him and he will deliver on time. It's amazing how people have the audacity to do what they do in God's world. All I have to do is be still and know that he is God.
I got taken as well...I need to find a lawyer...if you know of one that has dealt with UOP and won please reply. Half way thru the program they raise tution and my class was suppose to graduate with MBA in March 2011 and then are saying no...not till Sept 2011...when I needed them they didn't answer and now that I withdrew they are calling...it is a FOR PROFIT university we are just customers to them..well I am not pleased with their service...I can't even transfer these classes and I have lost out on 20K...what a joke
UOP is a scam, I know of many who have discovered this too late. The price is way high, the training is way low. Real classrooms is what you need, look at the masses of UOP grads using their diploma's for wallpaper in the bathroom. That's about all it's worth, don't take anyones word for it just do your own research and you'll soon learn......it stinks!
I just completed my Associate degree in Web Design with the UOP online, and they tried their best to encourage (deceive) me into continuing with the bachelors program. I realized after the first year (2008), that this degree program was a waste of time and money! I decided to at least complete the associate program with hopes of transfering, but I foolishly failed to do the necessary research for transfering my credits. The credits will not transfer! I am now $20,000 in debt for a useless 2-year IT degree. I earned a 3.96 GPA, so I learned all they had to offer, but what they offered was NOT adequate! I cannot get the past two years back, but I sure would love to sue for the $20,000 I now owe in student loans.
Thank you for posting this! I am looking into getting my Masters degree online. I have to attend online so as reluctant as I was to look into U of Pheonix (because of their reputation) I thought it would at least keep it as a consideration. You are absolutely correct programs like these are diploma mills! It is so tragic that these companies accept Pell Grant money but do not seek to educate just merely make a profit. I am sorry for your experiences could you apply to a Masters program at a legitimate University? I know the cost issue I face that myself but maybe broaden you occupation choices there are some degree programs that offer tuition stipends with the clause of commiting to work for a few years for the gov. in that particular field. Anyway Thanks again!
I worked there and they could care less about you or your educational goals. Tell everyone you know this is a huge scam.
I TOOK CLASSES ONLINE FROM GENERAL TO TAKEN CLASSES FOR MY MAJOR WHICH WAS BSBA IN ADMINISTRATIVE. HAVENT GRADUATED YET BECAUSE I OWE SOME MONEY AND I ALSO HAD FINANCIAL AID AND LOANS FROM LENDER. NOW IM SUCK TO PAY ALITTLE OVER 7,000 FOR MY PRIVATE LOAN THAT WENT TO A DEBT COLLECTOR AND THAT THEY CAN FREEZE MY ASSETS WELL NEEDLESS TO SAY I DONT HAVE ANY ASSETS TO FREEZE. IM ON SOCIAL SECURITY. AND I DO AGREE WITH EVERYONE ON HERE THEY DONT HELP YOU AND SOME DO HAVE A JACKED UP ATTITUDE AND MOUTH. WHAT I DONT GET IS THAT THE SCHOOL SEND YOU A CHECK AND YOU HAVE A CHOICE TO SEND IT BACK OR CASH IT. MYSELF I CASHED IT BECAUSE THEY SEND IT TO ME AND I PUT TI TI GOOD USE. I READ THE LAWSUIT AND I TRULY UNDERSTAND WHERE THE PLAINTIFFS ARE COMING FROM. I ATTENDED IN AUG. 05'TO JUNE 06' AND I HAVENT RETURN SINCE THEN.
The poster above said about UP: "The education you get from them is no better and no worse than the same degree anywhere else." Really? No worse than a degree from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, the Sorbonne, Oxford? The University of Phoenix is the same as these universities? Sorry, but you are dead wrong.
P.S. The only positive comments on forums like this are from UP agents who are paid to troll the internet and post good things about their joke of a "school." Trust me, I know this for a fact. I dated one.
University of Phoenix is a joke, and not a "university." It is an online trade "school," and a poor one at that. I am a Professor at a real university, and I assure you that no one, no one, takes a UP "degree" seriously. If you want to actually be educated, go to a real university. It is cheaper, 100 times better, and it is taken seriously and not mocked and laughed at.
I need more info about their school. You would imagine since it is an online university, they would provide more information online.... Instead of having to talk to a counselor
I went to the school for one semester. left with a GPA of 3.11. I found out early this was not the school for me; as far as learning more a bout your field. I think if we pay this much for education, we should at least get our books. This school owes me money and has not paid yet. FASA says it's my money. They have yet to send it. So...this school is for people who has a degree already and just wants to go farther in life. 5-6 week classes can not help someone who has never had formal education outside k-12
And I forgot to mention, they have an "A" with the Better Business Bureau. I had read a few blogs about how previous students felt that the school was a joke, but really, anyone can blog about anything they are dissatisfied with. And my final thought is that you get what you pay for.
I cannot agree with your saying that the school is a joke. I just completed my Associate's degree. The classes are VERY challenging, and I had to apply myself more than at the local community college I had taken classes at (and by the way, most colleges and universities offer online classes). It is a real university with in-depth classes, the same as if you drove to a university campus and sat in class for hours at a time. Any university is costly.
My enrollment counselors, academic counselors, and financial advisor call me quite frequently to check-in and ask if I have any questions or concerns. Maybe the person you were working with just sucked. I am fortunate enough to have had the best experience with all but one person that I had to deal with. I called and complained and immediately I had a new person in her place to help and was much better. You must understand that not everyone cares enough to do a good job, but that is where you probably should have taken over and informed someone from the school.
University of Phoenix is a total joke. Anybody enrolled their is a sucker and a moron. Did you know the enrollment counselors pay rate is based on how many students they enroll? In other words, they work on commission and therefore have a vested interest in enrolling people. There is no support system, the student and employee turnover rate is incredible because it is a complete joke. Have fun spending about 3 times what you would at your local university
U of Phx is a joke!
I went through U of Phx to get a Master's in IT. I needed the online option as I was working full-time in the IT field already. Needless to say, the program was a total joke. I even turned in one group member for blatantly plagiarizing content directly from web sites. I noticed that they were doing this during class participation but felt I had to turn them in when it came to submitting our group paper. I wasn't about to submit a paper with my name on it when it contained obvious plagiarism.
As for the Apollo Group, I have tried to apply with them after being laid-off. My experience and skills fit to a T with what they do, yet I was repeatedly rejected. They did not even want to talk to me and I can only surmise that having a degree from U of Phx is like the kiss of death. I am still paying for what turned out to be the most worthless piece of education I ever received. So, no, you are not imagining anything. But i wouldn't feel too bad. From what I've heard from people who actually worked there it's a sweatshop and they don't actually care about the people that work for them.
I recently had the chance to look over some coursework for the U of P's first and second-year students. It appears these classes were designed for high school freshmen (no book reports for "Lord of the Flies" appeared in the syllabus, though). Their recruiting tactics border on stalker/car salesmen, and they seem to be all about signing people up.
I feel for you man, I lived in Honolulu for 5 years, the Hawaii job market is totally different than the rest of the US. I remember being over there and not hearing any national news, the Local news in Hawaii concentrated on just that, LOCAL news. I think the UOP needs to be shut down, High School advisors told me DO NOT attend UOP they are too high in tuition and are not regionally accredited. Well it seems like alot of people are having problems finding jobs after graduating UOP, I don't think that's by accident.
In my third bachelor's class, feeling like I have learned nothing...
nice article... i hope you find something soon!
Chickasaw- I think you should stop while you are ahead- well you aren't even really ahead yet. You tout about the fact that you "attended" U of Phoenix, but obviously you struggle with basic grammar and English so I would hardly think Phoenix could have helped in your case. I agree University of Phoenix is most likely a scam and best of luck ssafery, nice post.
youre the one that needs too get over it the university of pheonix is a big scam i took there I.T program also and another thing i want too say is that university employs people too look for bad openians online about that school then they blog all kinds of nice things about the school then they resort too grade school play ground name calling.this school needs too be shut down!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get over it! Even Harvard students can't find jobs. Or don't you watch the news?

I agree that any education from UOP is a joke! This school is ripping students off left and right. I took their Bachelors and went straight into their MBA which I now know both are a joke!! I have the undergrad in Accounting and the offers I get for accounting positions pay maybe $12/hr....the MBA doesn't even matter is laughed at .....I owe ovedr 104K in student loans, that I was unaware of being charged for.......I hope we can take legal action to close this university and that all of us can get out of the debt for a totally worthless education!!!!
